Weather barrier pioneer honoured as DuPont fellow

DuPont has recognized building science and construction technology leader Theresa ‘Teri’ Weston with the title of fellow, the company’s highest technical professional level for scientists and engineers, shared by only 12 other active members around the world.

Working within DuPont’s safety and construction division, Weston has contributed to a $300-million-plus business in weather barriers. Recognizing the potential effects of moisture and weather intrusion on buildings’ structural integrity and energy efficiency, she collaborated on the 1996 introduction of DuPont’s Tyvek HomeWrap, which led to the development of StuccoWrap, DrainWrap, CommercialWrap and FlexWrap.

“Teri is a powerful example of how one innovator can transform an industry through leadership, scientific acumen and tenacity,” says Alexa Dembek, DuPont’s senior-vice-president (SVP) and chief technology and sustainability officer (CTSO). “She recognized the environmental benefits and financial need for better weather sealing technology in the marketplace.”

Weston holds four patents, writes technical papers, sits on ASTM’s executive committee on the performance of buildings and chairs its subcommittee on air leakage and ventilation. In the past, she has chaired ASHRAE’s technical committee for the standard for energy-efficient design of new low-rise buildings, among others.
