EllisDon aims to #BreakTheBias

On March 10, EllisDon hosted its 2nd International Women’s Day (IWD) Virtual Celebration hosted by EllisDon’s 2gether, a group dedicated to gender equality within the company. The virtual event centred on the IWD theme, #BreakTheBias, encouraging action against inequality to create change within our industry.

Participants listened to personal and inspiring stories about the challenges and biases women have faced in their career paths from a number of women leaders at EllisDon, including assistant superintendent Lorinda Spencer, junior estimator Ursula Tauers, assistant project manager Chinyere Johnson, and health, safety, and environmental coordinator Daniela Xavier.

Also joining in the conversation live from Montreal was Karolina Wisniewska, a three-time Paralympian in para-alpine skiing and winner of eight Paralympic medals. Karolina spoke about her time as a Canadian athlete and shared some personal stories and advice during the question and answer portion of the event.

Geoff Smith, president and CEO of EllisDon, and Paul Trudel, senior vice-president of people and culture had a fireside chat discussing the personal and professional impact that women have had on their lives, their take on breaking the bias, and the future they see for women in construction.

“It is so important to celebrate the successes of all our strong women at EllisDon and in the construction industry,” said Kristine Szeto, director of mechanical and electrical preconstruction at EllisDon and chair of EllisDon’s 2Gether. “We still face so many challenges and biases, it’s important to take the time to reflect, celebrate and focus on our path forward.”
